Meth Testing

Protecting your family's health

Are you aware that meth labs can be located virtually anywhere – including private rural or urban residential dwellings, commercial properties, hotels, cars and boats?  During the methamphetamine manufacturing process, chemical compounds become airborne and settle on walls, ceilings, appliances, floors, carpets and other typical household items throughout the interior.

Meth use also contaminates property, leaving residual compounds behind that can affect current and future residents.  The presence of these chemicals can create health hazards for the property’s occupants, particularly young children who crawl across floors, and may represent significant liability to property owners. In domestic properties, it is most likely to be future tenants or owners who will unknowingly suffer the effects from exposure to residual contaminants (www.health.govt.nz.)

The chemicals from meth manufacture or use do not just go away over time, they need to be manually removed.

Straight Up Inspections offer meth tests in Tauranga, Rotorua, areas of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty-wide that will help give you peace of mind about whether meth has been used or manufactured on surfaces in a property you have a vested interest in. It is a safe process with no risk of damage to any surface. Both Alistair and Claire are qualified NZQA Methamphetamine Testers.

Meth Testing Pricing

Results available within 24 hours (extra charges apply), standard results usually available within 2 working days after sampling (dependent on Couriers at the moment).
Samples are sent to Analytica Laboratories. You can choose to have as many or as few samples taken as you would like.  However, we suggest where possible that every room in the property be tested for meth.

Standard Meth Testing:
Field Composite or Laboratory Composite

After analysis, the result represents a total from all the surfaces tested (10 at most).

When combined with a Builders Report,
                                a DISCOUNT of $50 applies.

  • 2-4 Bedroom Property:* 2 composites of up to 5 samples each (10 at most) - Cost: $280.00
  • 5+ Bedroom Property: 3 or 4 composites of up to 5 samples each (20 at most) - Cost:  $450.00
  • Urgent next day results - add $60.00 per 10 samples (Extra Courier fee may apply)

Discrete (Individual) Laboratory Meth Testing

Individual surfaces are sampled and analysed separately, giving you an accurate amount per room/area tested.

Urgent next day results - add $50.00 per test
(Extra Courier fee may apply)

  • Each test costs $130.00
  • Call out fee applies if less than 5 tests are required

Meth Testing Methodology by Straight Up Inspections

Laboratory Meth Testing:  Our samples are sent to Analytica Laboratories.  They are an IANZ (ISO 17025) accredited laboratory who follow the NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in the USA) 9111 method to test for methamphetamine and related compounds (Amphetamine, Ephedrine and Pseudoephedrine) using surface wipes.  Results will be received within 2, or sometimes 3 working days of samples being taken (allowing for couriers to be on time).  A priority analysis can be organised at extra cost for a next day result.

  • Individual Sample Analysis. Individual surfaces are wiped and analysed separately, to a detection limit of 0.02µg per 100cm² (the lowest possible). This is the most thorough analysis allowing for specific amounts of meth on specific surfaces to be identified. It is the most expensive option to begin with – but gives you the most thorough results.
  • Lab Composite Analysis. Individual surfaces are wiped (on individual cotton gauze swabs) and put into separate containers but they are analysed together in batches of up to 10 at the lab. This allows for an initially lower cost but retains the ability to test samples individually if needed without further sampling. The meth test results you receive (to a detection limit of 0.02µg per 100cm²) will tell you whether meth has been detected or not as an average from the composite, they will not give you results for a specific surface or amount for that surface. If meth is detected, you can use these same samples for individual testing, at extra cost.
  • Field Composite Analysis. Up to 5 individual surfaces are wiped (on individual cotton gauze swabs), put into one container and tested together at the lab as a single sample. After analysis, the result (to a detection limit of 0.04µg per 100cm²) represents the total from all surfaces in the composite, they will not give you results for a specific surface or amount for that surface. A return sampling visit is needed (at extra cost) to collect individual samples for further testing if meth was detected.

Please note:  It is not possible to sample every surface.  The costs for this would be very prohibitive.

MINISTRY OF HEALTH GUIDELINES (MOH)

In June 2017 a new set of guidelines was released by the MoH regarding levels of methamphetamine in a property/on a surface.  In summary, the revised recommendations are:

  • If methamphetamine is present at levels above 1.5µg per 100cm² in a high-use area, the property/surface is regarded as contaminated and decontamination should occur.
  • If methamphetamine is present at levels above 3.8µg per 100cm² in a low-use area, the property/surface is regarded as contaminated and decontamination should occur.
  • High-use areas are areas in a property that can be easily accessed and are regularly used by adults and children.  Low-use areas are areas that are likely to be accessed by adults only and for short periods of time.  These include crawl spaces and wall cavities for example.
